SECURITY SERVICES

Attacks on computer systems of companies or organisations that you have an account with, known as a 'data breach',  may have exposed your personal details to criminal hackers. Along with Covid-19 scams, it is a timely occasion to let you know, as this type of cyber crime is growing rapidly, that there are several fairly new services available to help you keep safe.

  1. FRAUD.  If you have suffered a fraud via your computer or telephone, you should report it to  https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/, or call 0300 123 2040, who will provide help and advice. Further advice can be found on the Citizen Advice Consumer helpline on 03454 040506.

  2. EXPOSURE.  If you are concerned about whether your details have been exposed by a data breach,  by any organisation you have dealt with, you can check on this web site: https://haveibeenpwned.com/  Click on this URL and enter your email address to check. The site covers all such exposures across the world. If you find that you have been exposed, you would be wise to change your critical passwords.

  3. COMPLAINTS.  If you want to complain about nuisance calls, or how a company is treating you or your computer information, contact the Information Commissioner’s Office at: https://ico.org.uk/, or have a chat with them on  0303 123 1113. They have significant enforcement powers to help you.

  4. SCAMS.  If you suspect that an email you have received is a  ‘scam’ (attempted fraud), or a web site you think is suspicious, you should report it immediately to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) at GCHQ, who will investigate and take action against all fraudsters, blocking such emails and websites and working with the police to identify and investigate the criminals. Just forward your suspicious email to: report@phishing.gov.uk  with any comment you may have. To block unwanted texct messages, forward to 7726

  5. Other aids: Call blocker : www.truecall.co.uk or 08000 336 330

TEMPEST WEATHER STATION TIPS

The Tempest weather station is an electronic artificial intelligent weather station, so is very accurate and should continually be improving its forecasts. It loads from the internet by clicking on the icon on the Links page of our web site.

  • To get hourly rain and wind forecasts click (or tap) on the right hand side icons for the day ahead in question.

  • click the Tempest icon      in the top right hand corner to get all current readings, then click any icon to get graphical history for that measurement e.g. rain. Click '+' a few times to get most recent (every minute or so) graph, and '–' to give up to monthly summaries.

  • Click Map to show location of all Tempest weather stations, zero in to where your holiday cottage is (even in South Africa, Eric!) and click the nearest station to get the weather there. The name of the station appears in a yellow box (top right), click it to get all its forecasts and history as for the Thames Ditton station.
