Many business and professional men enjoy their jobs, and believe they make a useful contribution to them, which they find fulfilling. They make friends with colleagues and others, because  they want  and need to work with them, and meet them every day. But as commuting is often part of working life, those friends often live far away, outside your local community. It is too easy to lose them when approaching retirement. And sometimes the work focus has become rather specialised, and there can be a wish to widen your horizons, take on different challenges, make new friends, and relax from the rigours of working life.

Probus was conceived over 50 years ago as a lunch and social club by a few men who were looking to be part of their own local community after retirement, while keeping in touch with business life. Initially supported by Rotary, Probus has since grown around the world, with some 4,000 independent clubs giving social benefits to local areas.

Hinchley Wood and the Dittons Probus club is no different. Our members are lawyers, bankers, civil servants, engineers, marketing managers and the like. Some still do part time work, others play tennis, bowls, croquet etc, and many like to go for a beer together in our local pub on occasions!

We meet monthly at Imber Court, the Met Police social club and horse training centre. They look after us well, with a pleasant canteen and bar. We have had many interesting speakers: a QC, an MP, a diplomat, pilots, racing drivers, a King’s Messenger, even the Queen’s personal bodyguard, as well as several talks about famous people and events. Then the floor is open to questions.

Some have been members for many years, and built a great camaraderie that always welcomes new recruits and visitors. You will be welcome to join us at our next meeting (see our Home page') which is on the third Tuesday of the month; just turn up at about 10.30 a.m. But please contact us (see contact page) if you would like to make yourself known in advance.
